AOR HEAVEN ::: N E W S L E T T E R ::: 25/09/2020

Howdy melodic rockers,

Business is rolling along nicely with a nice bunch of news for next week incl. those endless delayed Rock Candy titles (Giant, Heaven, Damn Yankees, Black Rose) and some more.

There was also the new Fierce Heart (great album - BTW) scheduled for this Friday, but their label seems to have problems with the pressing as it has been postponed back now to October the 9th.

Also the new Night album "High Tides" will take longer as expected - the release date was scheduled for today, but still no copies in sight !

As a label owner I can only advice - sent your parts to the pressing plant right in time !☺

Have a great week

Georg & Monika

AOR HEAVEN SPECIAL RELEASE:

DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH - Diamond In The Rough +2

A: 11 € B: 13 €

DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH from Canada is finest stuff for fans of GLASS TIGER, LEVEL 42 (!), SPANDAU BALLET (!!) und TOTO. Originally released in 1989, the band could’t really make it, for whatever reasons, although signed to Virgin Records back in the day. Unbelievable given the quality of tracks like “Walk On The Wire“, “Run From The Dark“ or ´“Thief In The Night“, they have got every ingredient a typical late eighties hit needed to have. Certainly rather pop that rock, with many tracks meeting the requirements of melodic rock and AOR fans, though. Limited to 500 copies and with liner notes by Dave Reynolds. Rik Emmett (g, TRIUMPH) guests with a guitar solo on one song.

AOR HEAVEN RELEASES:

ATLAS - Parallel Love

A: 11 € B: 13 €

Album number two by British melodic rock outfit offering progressive bits and pieces at times, too. “Parallel Love“ deals with various relationships of different kinds, although not being a true concept album. ATLAS offer a reasonable amount of heavy guitars, as well huge keyboards and a singer (Craig Wells) who really rocks and brings a little bit of crispiness into play. Definitely heavier in total than the strong 2018 debut “In Pursuit Of Memory“ but also a logical evolutional step. Mostly melodic rock, the record offers a little bit more complex sounds at times. ATLAS is a band not to lose track of.

TRISHULA - Time Waits For No Man

A: 11 € B: 13 €

TRISHULA, whose mainman is Neil Fraser (g, ex TEN, RAGE OF ANGELS) who once again works with Welsh singer Jason Morgan play melodic hard rock and AOR. “Time Waits For No Man“ delivers diverse and astonishing songwriting as well as a pristine but powerful production. Surprisingly enough, though, it’s partly not the guitars but rather the keyboards standing in the center of attention here (“How It’s Supposed To Be“ or “The Mighty“). But then there are magnificent guitars, too (e.g. “Hear No Evil“). Also check out “Fallen Hero“ and “I Just Might“, the latter with a slice of gospel. But also “Make Up Your Mind (Take Your Time)“ is nothing but a true melodic highlight. Definitely no time wasted here.

EXPECTED NEW RELEASES !!

NOW OR NEVER - III

A: 13,5 € B: 16 €

Founded in 2012 by guitarist Ricky Marx (ex-Pretty Maids) and bass player Kenn Jackson (also ex-Pretty Maids) NOW OR NEVER recorded their self-titled debut album and got a great response from the hard rock / metal scene and great reviews by the press. The follow up "II" (2016) pretty much followed in the same musical paths. Now 2020 with a new rhythm section NON are back with “III“, the third installment from the band where sonically, the atmospheres are more subtle than their previous releases, with the guitar and keyboards arrangements adding to the vocals, culminating in a warm, wide and harmonic tone to the album, but still with a heavy and tight rhythm section. “III” is the best of both worlds, melodic but hard n’ heavy.

DAMN YANKEES - Don't Tread + 2
(digitally remastered)

A: 13 € B: 15,5 €

‘Don’t Tread’, the second and final album from the supergroup feat. Tommy Shaw, Jack Blades, Ted Nugent & Michael Cartelone was issued in 1992 to huge anticipation. Sadly, however, the expectation of another blockbuster release was rudely frustrated when the album failed to connect with their fan base and the wider public. All the ingredients that made the first album so enjoyable are still here, but for some reason, the songs themselves just don't seem as strong, even if some are a little heavier in places (but not much). This is still a fine slab of well-produced commercial hard rock, but the songwriting dipped a bit downward between this album and the first classy debut. Rock Candy re-issue, digitally remastered.

GIANT - Last Of The Runaways
(digitally remastered)

A: 13 € B: 15,5 €

Giant was formed by some of the most sought after backing musicians in the business, including singer/guitarist Dann Huff, his brother Dave on drums, guitarist Mike Brignardello, and bassist Alan Pasqua. After working with a wide array of artists from Whitesnake to Madonna, the Huff brothers put together Giant and took the melodic rock world by storm. 1989's “Last of the Runaways” was the band's debut album, and it's pretty incredible. These session guys essentially put on a clinic here in how to write, perform, record, and produce a melodic rock album. Combining elements of the wildly popular hair metal sound with a more accessible pop edge, “LOTR” is simply a killer album. Rock Candy re-issue.

HEAVEN - Where Angels Fear To Tread (digitally remastered)

A: 13 € B: 15,5 €

Formed in 1980 and based in Sydney, Heaven featured not only a stylised sound similar to AC/DC, but also their vocalist Allan Fryer had been in contention to replace Bon Scott after his tragic death in 1980. Furthermore, Heaven was handled by AC/DC’s former manager. „Where Angels Fear To Tread“ (1983) was in fact the band’s second album. Recorded in Los Angeles it boasts a number of standout tracks and features backing vocals from the likes of Glen Hughes, Lita Ford, and Ronnie James Dio. Driven by the frantic pace of the title track, the album includes a number of anthems including ‘Scream For Me’, ‘Madness’ and ‘Hard Life’.” Rock Candy re-issue, digitally remastered.

BLACK ROSE - Black Rose
(digitally remastered)

A: 13 € B: 15,5 €

In 1980, Cher was romantically involved with rock guitarist Les Dudek and this led to the musical collaboration that became Black Rose. Cher had just released two disco records for Casablanca in 1979, „Take Me Home“ and „Prisoner“. But „Black Rose“ was different. It wasn't disco, it was actually something closer to a mainstream rock album for that time. Produced by James Newton Howard and released on the Casablanca label in 1980, it featured song contributions from a number of sources, including Toto’s David Paich, Bernie Taupin and Mike Chapman. The album is a solid example of hard rock, with Cher’s immediately identifiable vocals taking centre stage. Digitally remastered re-issue from Rock Candy Records.

NEW RELEASES IN STOCK !!

STAGGERWING - II (digi pack)

A: 13 € B: 15,5 €

After their enjoyable debut last year, Swedish classic hard rockers STAGGERWING are back with the sophomore effort simply titled ‘II‘. Formed by experiences musicians such as Peo Pettersson (P.A.L., ex- Leviticus) and his long time friend guitarist Dan Boström (who worked with him on the classic AOR Peo solo debut). If Staggerwing debut album was a lovely slice of classic rock / hard, “Staggerwing II” is even better: they take the best of ’70s Rainbow, Deep Purple, Whitesnake – complete with Hammond organs runs et all – and add their own spin with little bluesy feeling. This is very good classic stuff, and 4 members of the band perform lead vocals, so expect variety and interesting arrangements.

MARK BOALS & RING OF FIRE - All The Best! (2 CDs)

A: 14,5 € B: 17,5 €

The list of musicians involved is long and impressive, you find Doug Aldrich (g), Tony McAlpine (g), Vinny Appice (d) or Erik Norlander (key) among many others. Melodic hardrock with a lot of seventies and eighties vibes sung by an exceptional singer with a huge range vocally. Great collection to enter the musical world of MARK BOALS!

THE CASANOVA'S - Reptilian Overload

A: 12,5 € B: 15 €

“Reptilian Overload“ is the fifth album by the Australians. Produced by Mark Opitz (AC/DC, COLD CHISE). It is sweaty and honest rock with slices of punk and a large portion of sleaze. Tracks like “Hollywood Riot“, “Cold Day In Hell“ or “Stand Back“ are simply fun but will probably work on stage even better. You get a nice, eye-twinkling artwork, too. Does anybody remember the eighties TV show “V: The Series“?

DAVID ZAFFIRO - The Other Side
(digitally remastered)

A: 13 € B: 15,5 €

Fans of the Seattle based melodic metal band Bloodgood are certain to be familiar with guitarist David Zaffiro, the talented musician who contributed the fast fingered lead guitar work to the bands first three albums.  After departing Bloodgood following the release of its 1988 effort "Rock In A Hard Place", Zaffiro recorded his first solo album entitled "The Other Side" (1989) in which he goes after a stylish acoustic laced combination of hard rock and melodic rock and handles the lead vocals as well. The album opens to three superb polished hard rockers in "Stay", "I See Red" and "Where Are You Now" that would sound right at home on "Rock In A Hard Place". Digitally remastered re-issue.

DAVID ZAFFIRO - In Scarlet Storm
(digitally remastered)

A: 13 € B: 15,5 €

Solo outing number two for ex- BLOODGOOD axe slinger David Zaffiro. This time around we are given less metal and more middle-of-the-road, melodic rock. The guitar work is polished and is not overly flashy, even in the lone instrumental "Blue Ice". This track really reminded me of something Joe Satriani might do and is probably my favorite track on the CD. The music on the rest of the disc is a bit more melancholy than his first solo CD and seems to be a bit more emotional as well. When this CD came out in 1990 a lot of BLOODGOOD fans were disappointed that this CD was so mellow in comparison to Zaffiro's former band and even his first solo CD, but over time many, how grown to appreciate the mellower side.

DAVID ZAFFIRO - Surrender Absolute
(digitally remastered)

A: 13 € B: 15,5 €

In 1992 David Zaffiro released a third album called 'Surrender Absolute'. This album finds David leaving the Metal genre and moving down to the Soft Rock section falling more into the 80s AOR category.David got joyned by his ex- band college Michael Bloodgood and AVION singer Randall Waller and this makes the whole thing even more attractive for the AOR fan base. David Zaffiro shines at the three instrumentals "Silas And Serai", "Attitude" and "No Long Goodbyes" in true Joe Satriani / Steve Vai style. Possibly his finest solo release and worth having for 80s Christian AOR lovers. Digitally remastered re-issue.

DAVID ZAFFIRO - Yesterday's Left Behind
(digitally remastered)

A: 13 € B: 15,5 €

In 1994 David Zaffiro released his fourth album titled 'Yesterdays Left Behind' which follows in the veins of his third release 'Surrender Absolute'. There are a few tracks here that are note worthy with the first being the tune "Winds Of September" which is a well executed tune where we find guest vocalist Steven Patrick stepping up to the microphone from the well known band Holy Soldier. 'Winds of September' was written by Steven Patrick and the vocal work is very reminiscent of his work with Holy Soldier. Besides the usual instrumentals ("Nothing's Gonna Stand In Your Way") you'll also find here the bluesy Country rock flavored instrumnetal track "Bottle Top". Digitally remastered re-issue.
