English hard/melodic rock outfit BLOOD RED SAINTS change their direction at times on their third album since the incarnation of the band which took place in 2014. But don’t be (too) afraid, they are still there, the great hooks (e.g. “Crash Into Me“, “Message To God“ or “Warrior“). Tracks like “Believer“ and “Animals“ or the powerful title track on the other hand have a more modern approach, just like the pre-album single “Warrior“. But the BLOOD RED SAINTS definitely have a great advantage no matter what direction stylelistically they may choose: Pete Godfrey (IN FAITH) has been and still is one of the finest voices in melodic rock out there. In addition to that, the two guitars played by Lee Revill (ex TEN) and Neil Hibbs are also remarkable.

“Capricorn Six“ is solo effort number six by Swedish singer and guitarist MIKAEL ERLANDSSON, who is mainman with LAST AUTUMN’S DREAM. So it’s no surprise that the sound is not that much different at all. Harder tracks like “Pain“ or “Fear“ can be found, but it’s mostly rather slow and emotional (“Had To Let You Go“). The final track by the name of “Alice In Wonderland“ is a beautiful BEATLES-homage. Therefore, “Capricorn Six“ is way more than just a life-sign in-between two LAD albums for sure. The Swede with quite a unique voice and nodoubtedly great talent for writing amazing hook lines and songs that simply take you by storm delivers. Martin Kronlund (e.g. GYPSY ROSE, REECE) was hired for the mix to provide a pair of fresh ears. There are no fillers and the production is fine, too. The opener (“Eye Of The Hurricane“) ist the best possible way into the album.

Dutch band TERRA NOVA fully delivers with their anticipated seventh album. AOR with with a very charismatic voice and mature songwriting is on the plate. “Raise Your Voice“ mostly contains great AOR/melodic pearls like “Don’t You Walk Away“, “The Other Side“ or the title track. Some of the songs do have a bit of a seventies-touch which matches the songwriting pretty well. Therefore, raise you voice and check out “Raise Your Voice“! It would be well-deserved!

“Reflections“, the second album of German-Serbian AOR/Melodic outfit DEVICIOUS sounds slightly harder than the debut but still - or probably more than ever - melodies and groove rule. The opener “Long Way From Home“ is a perfect start. Mastermind Alex Frey (b) and the guys rock through the album is finest eighties style which is underlined by the omnipresent but a bit too steady keyboards. Pretty cool, though, is “Never Let You Go“ featuring Åge Sten Nilsen (v, AMMUNITION, WIG WAM)

“Velvet Insane“ is the official debut of Northern Swedish band who after extensive and worldwide touring only had a couple of EPs for sale. A comparatively broad stylistic mix awaits you as there are melodic tracks like “Break Out Of Eden“ or “High On Love“ but also almost singer/songwriter tunes (“Coffee, Jazz & Arts“) as well as emotional and fragile (half-)ballads like “Six Steps Away“. Interesting band!

Incredible songwriting talent that Tobi Sammet of EDGUY-fame showcases again on the eighth (!) AVANTASIA record to date. Again combining some of the finest voices out here like Michael Kiske or Bob Catley and bringing in even some new additions, too, like Candice Night (BLACKMORE’S NIGHT) or Mille Petrozza (KREATOR). A perfect record which only doesn’t get a perfect rating because you can be sure that the next record takes it even further. Respect, Mr. Sammet! Brilliant record!

The fourth HERMAN FRANK record “Fight The Fear“ is pure and melodic metal. The former ACCEPT guitarist puts out quality constantly and these fourteen tracks do not have much of a filler, too. Foremost frontman Rick Altzi (MASTERPLAN) amplifies the powerful playing of Mr. Frank. Only that fact that there are basically no surprises at all stylistically could be a minor point of criticism but hey, so what?

Second album of the Finnish band of Anton Kabanen (g, BATTLE BEAST). They successfully continue the path of the 2017 debut “Berserker“ which means there are melodies all over the place but unlike their at times similar sounding fellow Finns BROTHER FIRETRIBE, you can find lots of references to the likes of SABATON, BLOODBOUND or ACCEPT as well. So BEAST IN BLACK is metal, of course. Good one!

COWBOY X was formed at the beginning of 1990 and though their time as band was brief, managed to do full club tours across the US Midwest and release a 6 song cassette featuring some of their strongest songs. Fast forward 2019 all these recordings plus 6 previously unreleased tracks are being officially put on CD for the first time under the title "Can't Stop Rockin'". Taking a quick look at COWBOY X promotional photos - big hair, AquaNet and snake boots - you can guess the musical style of the band: Typically US melodic hard rock with a classic late '80s / early 90s sound in the vein of MÖTLEY CRUE, DANGER DANGER, WARRANT and cohorts. Limited edition of 500 copies only.

LIONCAGE without doubt walk the path of TOTO, JOURNEY or HUEY LEWIS. Although being a German band they sound pretty international due to singer Thorsten Bertermann. "Secrets" with a guest appearance of Tim Pierce (e.g. RICK SPRINGFIELD) is a track that CHICAGO would have hardly done better in the eighties and for instance "Mysterious Angel" or "The Inner Circle" simply rock. LIONCAGE bubbles. The lions are ready to break out!

STEFAN BERGGREN - Stranger In A Strange Land |

The Swedish singer did some convincing appearances in hard rock bands and projects in the past (e.g. COMPANY OF SNAKES). "Stranger In A Strange Land" on the other hand is a comparatively quiet, mostly bluesy and partly rocking and folkish singer/songwriter album. A nice piece of seventies sounding music. Certainly one of the biggest surprises recently. WHITESNAKE veterans Bernie Marsden (g) or Neil Murray (b), among others, are guesting on the album. An album to be paid attention to.
